So it's a new year and time to pick up and dust off the ol' camera. (Really, it's only been 3 weeks...) But leaving the 5D where some grubby lil' hands can play with the buttons and dials is one hard lesson to learn, and a harder pill to swallow when it affects my clients! So, NO, these images are not all monochrome on purpose. My children just thought I need a challenge in the start of the New Year. Gotta love 'em...

As many of you know, my family experienced a great loss only a few short month ago. My husband's brother, my boys' uncle, my friend, Casey Randall died very suddenly and unexpectedly. Our family is still trying to recover from the tragedy...

Many of you ask, "How are you doing?" It's a hard question to answer. The sun shines, but some days are still grey. You see us smile, but we still harbor sadness in our hearts. You hear us laugh, but our hearts are still weeping...

One of the hardest parts for me is to see the people whom I love and cherish so much, hurting so badly. There's no easy fix...

I find solace in my Lord and in my work. I was blessed to be able to take pictures of Casey's beautiful baby boy while we were home for the memorial. In him, I see his Daddy. In him, I see Casey's spirit carried on. God is good.

We love you, Casey.

{New-Year Resolution} KMC Photographer - Through the Lens

So the 23rd of the month marks the 2nd year anniversary of 1K Words. (I'd been shooting a lot sooner than that, but my official, Department of Revenue/Federal Tax ID/Registered Business part was enacted on this day.) So, as a new business year approaches, I have vowed to do one thing. I'm going to start showing you the "personal" side to my photography. That is, when I'm not crawling around on the floor with their kids or getting paid to click my shutter, what type of things am I shooting? Where do I vacation? What does my family look like? How about my own kids?

Some of you may frown upon the idea of plastering my own children or pictures of my individual life on a business related blog. I, too, had some reservations about doing this. However, I think when your clients can "see the real you" in your personal pictures, you somehow become more real to them. They can learn something about you before you ever even meet - it's almost as if they feel they already know you. I believe this personal approach is what makes my business thrive, what sets me apart.

So, here marks the first post of my life as I see it through the lens.

So the year I spent "back home" is done and gone. And now that the DH is back, we've been living out of our suitcases since the 27th of July. We literally have slept in 15 different beds and traveled through 10 different states over the course of 7 weeks. (It seems crazy that I had to just stop and calculate all of that!) And slowly (with great emphasis) I've been working on the last of the photo sessions I did before I left home. Here's the latest one I did for an old friend from HS. It seems crazy that we all could have kids this old and we've been out of school that long! Here's a few pics of her cuties. I'll do another post showing some cool new branding bar tricks I learned :-)

Hubby's Coming Home!!

Just wanted to make an official announcement that my "War Hero" is coming home at the end of this month. And, because we haven't been together as a family for about a year, we are taking some much needed time off when he arrives! So 2.5 days of stomach flu has put me about 5 days behind schedule... Go figure! I finally was able to get on my computer tonight and do some much needed PP on my latest maternity shoot. I did post a few of my fav's already, but this one tops them all. As this mom knows, I wasn't so sure about these when I was taking them and was just "trying something new" on her... luckily I took a good number of shots. kept changing exposure patterns around, & (of course) shot in RAW and was able to get this MOST AMAZING shot! So here's one of the main reasons I got into this business! I love shooting bellies and babies! This shoot was extra fun because my clients were really up for anything and just wanted to have a bunch of fun pictures to remember their first pregnancy by. I especially encourage any and all future (& past) clients to read What Is Custom Photography & Why Does Custom Photography Cost More? before they book a session with me. I think there is a great misnomer that being a professional photographer only takes a good camera and a few extra hours a week. For me, creating photographs for you is much much more than that! And I truly believe that my job is to capture and deliver an amazing product that you will cherish for many years to come; a piece of "portrait art" that is irreplaceable and is, of course, worth 1K words...

So I had the honor of creating a few custom designed Christmas cards this year. One of my favorites was the one I did for my best friend and her family! I liked the design so much that I just changed the colors around a little bit and used it for our card as well! It's amazing how the whole "feel" of something can change simply by changing the color! Seeing Double

I recently got to shoot my first set of multiples...twin boys!! They are actually relatives of mine, so that is why they are so cute (he he). It was very hard to tell them apart during the shoot, even with the different colored pants! After processing, however, it was fun to zoom down to a single pixel to really "dissect" the differences. Jack & Noah, I've got you pinned so don't be trying to pull any fast ones any time soon! Thanks for the fun shoot!

Oh So Precious!

I took pictures of this little cutie when he was still in the belly! (See "Candid Takes the Gold" post) He was so easy going and was totally enamored by the camera...well at least the black and white strap on the camera. Isn't he just adorable!? It's All Fun & Games

Really! I have the best job in the world. And when I go back and edit the photos, I can't help but smile and remember how fun the shoot was. Yes, there are hurdles and snags here and there, but all in all I really have the best job in the world! I can't believe I get paid to do this stuff.

The W family were some of my first clients (beyond practice on friends and family) who took the risk and hired a "beginner" photographer. I must have done something right 'cuz they hired me back a second time :) I had so much fun with their kiddos and their daughter is too beautiful for words! I think the debate will be wether a hardy Scottish man, or a well-rounded American gent will be acceptable of taking her hand one day :) There were lots of good shots (i.e. their family pic from the last post) but I decided to post the ones that made me smile and I hope they're infectious!!

So I finally received my documents from the Wyoming Secretary of State and I have an official registered trade name as "1K Words Photography & Design." So it seems that any and all combinations of "A Thousand Words" just wasn't meant to be. That being said, I've also changed my blog address to "worth1kwordsphotography.blogspot.com." Once I've finished with all the bureaucratic red tape, I will even have my website up and running at www.worth1kwords.com. Tune in for more LEGAL updates...or tune out!!

Animal Crackers in My Soup...

Oh the curls!! This lil' punkin seed puts Shirley Temple to shame! And of course, she came wearing her favorite lil' tank-top with the Japanese doll on the front. Which, BTW, hits close to some childhood memories! I had such fun doing this shoot (and 6 more) on my last days in Rapid (tear). She was slow to warm up, but became quite the little fireball after a few shots were "fired!" I am proud to add Maiya to my portfolio and will be using one of her prints in my gallery in my future-studio! (SIDE NOTE: So of course these pics were taken a million years ago and I'm just now getting the chance to post them two months later at 12:35 am! Such is the life when you have a deployed hubby and two rambunctious boys! Never fear my other Rapid clients, your pics are soon to post!)

Christmas is just a little over TWELVE weeks away!! Hard to believe, right!? (Well, maybe not for those of us who just got 18 inches of snow!) That being said, I'm offering services to do Christmas cards this year. As a starter I've included three sets of templates that can be printed as 4 X 8 Photo Greeting Cards. Below are samples of those templates broken up into three categories: Seasons Greeting, Happy Holidays, and Merry Christmas. These are just template examples and prices start at $25 for a set of 24 cards (including envelopes). I will have more examples of Custom Holiday Cards once some have been completed. Beyond the collage work, I really wanted to post some of my favorite poses from this "newborn" session. I say newborn in quotations because he was just about to out-grow all my newbie props (as you can see from the towel shot :-) He was just too precious for words, and once he was through making his statement, as babies sometimes do, he was the perfect little subject. We even got a few extra shots in so his parents could wait out a hail storm that was passing through. Thanks, Caleb, for being such a good little subject and for having such a beautiful family!
